It was the time when I was struggling to sell my Instant
Tea Ready-mix called ‘Chocolate Masala Chai’.
The important question I was struggling with was “Who
needs my Tea?”
I wanted to sell it in
bulk, since the margins were low.
I was an expert in
Corporate Gifting by then (Thanks to my Chocolate venture)
But the problem was
nobody gifts tea sachets … atleast not in India.

Then I thought, how about small companies?

Then I thought, how about small companies?
Their employees drink ‘Chotuwali
Chai’ or they use vending machines.
I shortlisted 10
companies with just 8-10 employees which do not have vending machine.
I told them, “Look your people go out for tea break twice
a day. They waste hell lot of time during tea break. You can’t offer same Tea
on desk due to cost & hygiene factor. Why don’t you try my sachets? Just
keep a coffee maker to boil water and one sachet in hot water tea is ready.
It’s with milk & sugar”
No maintenance. Low cost .High productivity, hygiene and employee feel
good factor of taken cared by company. I packed all that in just one small tea
sachet.
This is the summary; but
it took little more…presentations, formal letters, few meetings & some
paperwork. And full six months.
I continued, “Here is a bag of 100 sachets for “free”
(that’s right Free Free Free) and a coffee maker for 15 days .Why don’t you
try?”
After 15 days; they
asked for cappuccino, herbal tea, cafĂ© mocha, masala tea, Cardamom Tea.I said ‘Yes’ to all.
So here is
my learning when you sell, don’t sell just the product/service.
You must
sell an opportunity or a dream or something more.
